Nathan declared September to be our Apple month. We talked about all the yummy things we were going to do with them. Big plans for apple pies and caramel apples. Apple crisp and a yummy batch of cinnamon apple sauce.
Our neighbor invited us over to pick as many apples as we wanted from his very endowed tree. I daydreamed we lived on an orchard and were harvesting all the green apples to sell in a little fruit stand in the country.
Soon, the month flew by and guess what? We made nothing! No fancy apple treats this year. We did however, enjoy a few from the tree.

Blackout
We experienced our first true blackout. For a few days in a row, the electricity was out for 6-7 hours at a time. What did we do? Lit candles, grabbed flashlights and told spooky stories about a witch that lives under the boys' bunk beds. Don't worry...even though she has a warty nose and cooks soups with bat wings, she is still nice!
I was glad that I didn't have chicken in the crock pot like I was planning on. Cold cereal never tasted so good for dinner and I'm pretty sure I won't take electricity for granted for awhile!

A Bump In the Road....
As I sit to write this, I am consumed with an overflowing amount of gratitude. This has been a journey full of twists and turns, ups and downs, happy moments and moments where you have to pick yourself up out of a hole in the ground. This is a time that no matter what, you know that you can count on family. A time when you don't know the outcome but you know the end of this story will be a good one because light always conquers darkness.
A little while ago, after going to 19 plus doctors, I was diagnosed with a Mycoplasma infection. It was in my blood, tissues, bone, and cartilage. A large amount had settled in my brain and face. I had a blood irradiation procedure done along with many other things and am currently waiting for my body to kick in. The power of prayer has kept me alive.
I have learned about a cycle that has molded a part of my soul. Through a thick and saturating amount of brain fog, I can still feel the learning process grow and take shape.
First, to have hope. This is perhaps the hardest part. You have to do some digging and when you begin to dig, your hole is so deep that you are mostly on your knees. You are finding out what you are made of and where your strength is truly coming from.
Then comes the faith and even though it starts as a tiny grain of sand...it begins to grow. You then have sand that sits in a small pile in the palm of your hand and as the pile slowly gets bigger it begins to gently sift through your fingers. You dream of the day when your sand of faith will fill beaches.
Next is receiving the miracle. This takes patience. It is excruciatingly painful. Many times we cannot see during this particular step. This causes us to exercise an abundant amount of trust. Our relationship with the Savior gets stronger and we draw closer to Him.
Sometimes it takes days, weeks, months, and even years but eventually you begin to be filled with the peace and can literally feel that you are being carried. Your eyes are usually opened when you look back at this step because when you are going through the fire, you can not feel.
After you receive the miracle, your faith is restored. This is by far, the best part of the journey. There is opposition in all things and this is when you bask in the rays of unimaginable happiness. There really are no words to describe the new awakening of joy that surges through your body to the tips of every extremity. Gratitude takes over and for a period of time that is all you feel.
Another huge lesson I am learning is: You can change the tone of the adversity you are facing.
I remember a particularly hard day that I was having, my mom came home from a meeting and said, "Your trial is our blessing."
I thought, "Who says that?"
These past years, though difficult have been some of the most fun ones I have ever had. I'm blessed to be surrounded by people that have overcome hard things and have had a sense of humor. Laughing is powerful and healing.
I feel grateful to reap so much service. It is overwhelming. I have had friends come clean my home, meals brought in, my kids have been taken and dropped off to school each day, babysitting, surprise visits, phone calls and texts, plates of goodies, letters in the mail, I have been serenaded to (by Luke haha), received flowers and many prayers have been uttered in my behalf.
So many have gone above and beyond and I feel a great bond with each.
I am full to the brim, my cup runneth over.

(Justin and Mom have constantly made sure I was feed, comfortable, and having a teeny bit of fun for the last few years.)

Best Quote I've Heard....In a Long Time.
"If that doesn't work...try something else.
If that doesn't work...try something else.
If that doesn't work...try something else.
Bottom line is... don't quit. Something will work!"
-Jim Cardon
I have reflected on this quote for the last 4 years. I believe it has saved my life.

Popcorn and Chats...
Keeping up with our "simple" theme this year, our after school party consisted of popcorn, m&ms, and lots of talking. A perfect recipe in my opinion.
I learned lots of things:
Scrambled eggs and an English muffin was a good breakfast to last until lunch because this year it was eaten before the kindergartners. Joey, Maddox, Brea, and Braden took their reining spot as Champions on the soccer field. Tomorrows outfit will be picked out tonight and draped over the bunk beds. Mrs. Pedotto is hilarious, she read The Kissing Hand and passed out homemade cookies with a caramel Kiss on top. Specials is first thing in the mornings. Music was good and a song was recited. Lots of stories are going to be read this year and even more written. This week will be different than all the rest of the weeks of school because of testing. A play date is in the works with Joey as Nathan has already talked to Mrs. Pelligrini all about it. There was one other person that had the exact same green water bottle and tomorrow tennis shoes will be worn because it's PE.
A very good day indeed!

2nd Grade
I'm always a bit sad on the first day of school and may or may not cry when I get home and see I'm down to "one". I always hope the summer went well and think of all the things I could of done a little better.
I left the school feeling a little queezy but as I raced Kendall up the hill, I knew he would help me fill up the day. I'm so thankful I have him.
We got lots done (Kendall did his job and kept me busy), took a nap, ate lunch, and got ready for our after school party. I always do one because I think that helps ease the pain. Plus, I'm DYING to know everything that happened!
I love this boy so much.
Shindiggy...
Just one last Barbecue was in order before the official school year began. We kicked it off with some football, a sweet munchkin, and coconut cream chocolate fondue:
- 1 15-ounce can sweetened cream of coconut or 1 can sweetened condensed milk
- 12 ounces bittersweet (not unsweetened) or semisweet chocolate, finely chopped
- 1/4 cup whipping cream
- 1/2 teaspoon coconut extract
- Assorted fresh fruit (such as whole strawberries, 1-inch-thick slices banana, 1-inch cubes peeled cored pineapple, and tangerine segments) and rice krispies
Combine sweetened cream of coconut
and 12 ounces chocolate in heavy large saucepan. Stir mixture over very low
heat until chocolate melts and mixture is smooth. Stir in whipping cream and
extract. (Fondue can be prepared 8 hours ahead. Cover; store at room
temperature. Stir over low heat to rewarm before serving.)
Mrs. Pedotto
School supplies have been purchased and yummy apple hand soap ready to go to the mystery 2nd grade teacher....
We drove up to school together as a fam listening to Nathan and he chattered excitedly about meeting his new teacher and seeing who was going to be in his class.
He said he was excited to learn and read and get better at writing and MATH!
We saw the list and headed to his new room to meet... Mrs. Pedotto! We instantly LOVED her! Her bubbly personality and enthusiasm was exactly what Nathan needed. He instantly felt comfortable and kept smiling at me. He choose a seat next to two of his previous classmates, Cade and Alex.
We began with a tour and looked outside where he would be lining up. I couldn't believe it! A beautiful flower garden lined a path to the 2nd grade playground. Yellow and purple flowers wafted a delicious "welcome back to school" smell.
We left the school with a grateful feeling and are excited for Nathan's 2nd grade chapter to begin....
